Ward and colleagues at Kent State surveyed students on how AI tools affected their study habits; they found students frequently using AI tools were able to decrease their study hours while achieving a higher GPA. But despite the positive outcomes, they also found challenges relating to over-reliance on AI, and emphasized the need for any tools used being complementary to current education methods, rather than replacing them.

3. NotebookLM
Google's NotebookLM allows you to upload a set of documents, from which it will search and summarize. You can ask question about your documents, in conversation, with the model only answering from what you've uploaded. It's great for querying lecture slides, assigned readings and your own notes. You can then request summaries or generate study material from that content alone. The model will not pull in information from outside your sources.

5. Claude or ChatGPT
Both Claude and ChatGPT are useful starting points for as general-purpose writers or editors. Where they can work in a student workflow:
- Explaining a concept you are stuck on. Ask for the same idea at three levels of depth, or from a different angle than your lecturer used.

10. GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot works inside your code editor. It suggests completions, generates functions from comments, explains unfamiliar code, and catching errors as you write. On assignments and projects it plays the part of a more experienced developer next to you: pointing out why something is not working, suggesting a cleaner approach, handling boilerplate so you can stay on the logic.
